Thomas Jane played The Punisher beautifully in the 2004 film.
And of course, Jon Bernthal was The Punisher in the bad-ass Netflix series. And as everyone knows, all the MCU Netflix shows have been cancelled. Insert sad face and broken heart emoji.
But alas, there may be hope for the Netflix characters. Because all rights to the Netflix characters will revert back to Disney soon. And there's rumors that Daredevil may even appear in the third MCU Spider-Man film. And if that does turn out to be true, I think it's safe to assume The Punisher will follow him into the MCU.
And wouldn't it be amazing if when Bernthal returns, that fellow Punisher alum Thomas Jane is behind the camera, leading him and giving him pointers? I absolutely love both takes on The Punisher. And a collab between the two would be heavenly.
It turns out, that both Punisher actors have a lot of love and respect for each other and their portrayals. Jon Bernthal once stated that Thomas Jane's Punisher short "Dirty Laundry" was one of his main inspirations.
And in a recent interview, Jane had kind words to say about Bernthal as well. He also stated his desire to direct Bernthal as The Punisher!
When asked about returning to The Punisher role in anyway, this is what Jane said:
"That would be a fan thing. If the fans really wanted me back, and we could find a script. See, I think the Punisher, and the reason why I did the short, was that it hasn't fully been cracked in a way that fully honors the character, Frank Castle, in a film. And I love what Bernthal did on Netflix. I think he's such a great Punisher. In fact, I would love to direct a Punisher starring Bernthal, because he's such a great actor."
