IFC's Latest Horror Movie "The Vigil" Dives Into The Demons Of Jewish Mythos

I'm not familiar with Jewish lore but I think I'm about to be

Keith Thomas' new horror film for IFC midnight will have us lighting candles in our homes at night.

The movie that takes place over the course of one night will premiere on February 26th, 2021 in theaters and VOD.

The film has already been shown at the Toronto International Film Festival where it was awarded critical acclaim at the Midnight Madness section.

Writer Keith Thomas is excited to bring you a new angle on the known paranormal universe. He hopes that this may be the pilot to a new franchise. Check out the official synopsis and trailer below...

Steeped in ancient Jewish lore and demonology, ‘The Vigil’ is a supernatural horror film set over the course of a single evening in Brooklyn’s Hasidic Borough Park neighborhood. Low on funds and having recently left his insular religious community, Yakov (Dave Davis) reluctantly accepts an offer from his former rabbi and confidante (Menashe Lustig) to take on the responsibility of an overnight ‘shomer,’ fulfilling the Jewish practice of watching over the body of a deceased community member. Shortly after arriving at the recently departed’s dilapidated house to sit the vigil, Yakov begins to realize that something is very, very wrong.

I'm looking for interesting takes in the realm of Jewish mythos that is completely unknown to me. I want to know what it's about. I'm quite also intrigued by some lighting techniques and how this will perform on release!

What're your first initial thoughts on this film? Cheap scares or window to a new realm of horror?
